I'm currently dealing with a 15 year old motor that has had quite a number of hours put on her in her lifetime. The technology is neanderthal in comparison to todays offerings, but offers a much more simplistic platform that could lead to longevity. Since, I don't have an hour meter, I'm conservatively estimating usage at somewhere between 2, hours over the last decade and a half. In my estimation, the motor has given me what I would expect. Nothing more, nothing less. Maybe I'm spoiled, but I have had very little shop time and when I did it was quick, easy and inexpensive.

Additionally, I have to factor in my wife and children being aboard almost every time the boat leaves the dock. Although they are hearty, I don't want the experience to be a dread. If you're using your boat year-round, then you are probably helping increase its longevity. Stored engines will last longer in terms of years of service but in terms of hours of service, more frequently used and properly maintained motors probably offer better durability of service.

I have seen 4 strokes with well over 5k on them used by commercial dudes. I would not expect that from a DFI just because of the design itself. Rings and such will eventually wear just like your outboard. But old tech is good and bad, My motor has NEVER let me down, carbs are easy to take care of, and not alot of electronics, everything is pretty straightforward and I can fix it I take good care of it.

Lots of Yamahas and Hondas on boats around here. If I was doing a repower like you, I would seriously just go with whomever is least expensive. Service isn't too much of an issue as you can either do it yourself or bring it on a trailer.
I have been told the Mercurys is quieter. I don't find the Yamaha loud. I think the bigger decision is cables or fly by wire.

What a surprise, both fuel pumps leaked. I tried writing Honda but was told "Honda has never had or offered a rebuild kit".
